A shoeless waif, on a bitterly cold night, takes shelter from the snow, lighting matches in order to keep warm, and sees in their flickering light visions of a better life. However, they prove of little use, as she soon succumbs to the weather, catching her death of cold, in this remarkably affecting, beautifully crafted adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1846 short story.
